Viarmo, a High Elf bard, is Headmaster of the Bards Higher in Solitude and as such, oversees the efforts of the three teachers, Inge Six Fingers, Pantea Ateia, and Giraud Gemane. His pride and joy is the Burning of King Olaf, an almanac festival held by the College in order to celebrate Solitude. Due to the recent murder of High Rex Torygg, the mourning widow and electric current Jarl, Elisif the Fair, has put a cease to the festival. She reasons that called-for a king in effigy is in poor gustatory modality, and y'all volition have to help out a discouraged Viarmo prove her wrong during the quest Tending the Flames.
His room is located in the northeastern fly on the ground floor of the college and he sleeps there every night between 7pm and 6am. He will then observe his usual spot in the lobby where he enjoys a one-hour breakfast at 7am. He stays in the lobby until 10am when he heads upward to the Winking Skeever for a iii-hour lunch with Giraud and Pantea (encounter notes). At 1pm he is dorsum in the lobby where he spends the unabridged afternoon. After a ane-hr dinner at 6pm he goes straight to bed. This daily routine just triggers upon completion of Tending the Flames; until then, Viarmo volition wander around the basis flooring of the Bards College 24 hours a mean solar day, with a few major exceptions listed beneath.
Viarmo wears a set of fine apparel along with a pair of fine boots. He carries a primal to the college and a pick of mutual items and gold.
All the bards performing all over Skyrim will point you towards the Bards College, and some of them will fifty-fifty mention the Headmaster: "I remember the Bards College might exist looking for recruits. You lot should speak to the caput of the college, Viarmo, if you lot're interested.", "If you become in that location, talk to Viarmo. He's the headmaster." and "If you lot're thinking of applying, talk to Viarmo in Confinement." A argument from local food merchant Jala proves that Viarmo is in high regards: "Everyone who's anyone. Viarmo bought an apple the other day, said he was looking for a new student.", while one of the students at the college, Jorn, is less impressed: "It'south an honor to have Viarmo for instruction on drum, but he's far too reserved for my tastes." and "Viarmo is as well concerned with precision. What of instinct? Hmm? What of passion?"
When yous enter the Bards College, Viarmo volition actively seek you out and personally welcome you: "Welcome to the Bards College. I am the headmaster here. How may I help yous?" When you apply for membership, he will reply: "E'er a pleasure to come across a prospective bard. Yous should be aware that many use merely we accept very few people. When possible, we enquire applicants to perform tasks the higher needs completed. In this case, I do have a task conforming an aspiring bard..." He will then motility on to your initiation task, covered in this department. All the same, he volition tell y'all if the ceremonious war has affected the college: "Not much. Just equally a bard, I find the whole affair depressing. There are no heroes in this war. No winners to be had and no real conclusion." If y'all take conquered Solitude for the Stormcloaks, he will alter this argument: "There are no heroes in this war. Fifty-fifty with Ulfric hither in Solitude, there are no winners to be had. No real determination." He volition, however, proceed on a positive note: "If you want something a bard can dig into look to the dragons. A k years from now Skyrim will have changed rulers dozens of times simply the return of the dragons, that story is once in an era." When asked if he knows annihilation about the dragons he volition point you lot towards his Dean of History: "Not much, to be honest. Their return was a shock to us all. Giraud Gemane has some tomes virtually them in the library, if y'all're interested." One time you have been initiated into the Bards College, Viarmo will also kickoff to greet you differently: "Welcome to Confinement. Dwelling of the arts here in Skyrim.", "Information technology is my personal mission to ensure that the Bards College preserves the keen deeds of the past, in both verse and song." Like to the Curvation-Mage of the Higher of Winterhold, Savos Aren, Viarmo will not mix his school with politics: "I generally don't involve myself in politics. Good tales bargain with the issues of the day, but a wise bard remains a neutral observer." and volition elaborate with: "We bards tape history - we exercise non brand it. You lot'd exercise well to retrieve that." Lastly, he may greet you with: "Never forget, the most important chore of any bard is to entertain. The day y'all lose your audience is the day you cutting your lute strings."
As headmaster, Viarmo wlll often ask the three teachers virtually their progress with the students:
"Complacency is the bane of fine art."
Viarmo: "How are your students coming forth?"
Inge: "Some of them accept a long manner to become, simply they're generally passable. Don't let them hear I said that, though!"
Viarmo: "Of course not! Complacency is the bane of art. They're in skillful hands with you lot, Inge."
Inge: "Yes, Headmaster."
Viarmo: "How are your students coming along?"
Pantea: "Passably. Aia is my star pupil. None of the others can agree a candle to her. Especially non that wretched llldi."
Viarmo: "Try non to play favorites, Lady Ateia. It does a disservice to the whole course."
Pantea: "Yep, Headmaster."
Viarmo: "How are your students coming along?"
Giraud: "Bunch of distractions, if y'all ask me. They just interrupt the rest of my work."
Viarmo: "I'm sorry to break it to y'all, Giraud, but students are an unfortunate necessity of a higher. Exercise try to persevere."
Giraud: "Yes, Headmaster."

Tending the Flames [edit]
After welcoming y'all to the College and revealing that all new applicants accept to perform an initiation job, Viarmo volition readily explain what needs to be done: "Elisif has forbidden the Burning of King Olaf, a Festival put on by the Bards College. Nosotros demand to change her listen. To convince her I desire to read Rex Olaf's Poetry. A function of the Poetic Edda, the living history of Skyrim. Unfortunately the poetry was lost long agone." He will then explicate your office: "Yep. According to Giraud, our histories keeper, the portion of the Edda dealing with King Olaf might still exist in Dead Homo's Respite. I need yous to think the poem." The quest will and so initiate and you tin ask him why Elisif forbade the Festival: "As yous may be enlightened Elisif's husband Loftier King Torygg was recently killed. Elisif mourns her husband deeply and she feels that a festival that burns a King in figure is... distasteful. I've tried to convince her the festival is many centuries sometime and celebrates Confinement just I need proof. I believe King Olaf'due south verse will provide that proof." Lastly, yous tin can enquire him what the Poetic Edda is: "I think Giraud here would give you the all-time explanation of both it and the history of Rex Olaf's Verse. You lot should speak to him almost it." He will then bid you goodbye: "I wish y'all luck in finding the poetry." When asked, Giraud Gemane will be happy: "He's sending yous later on Male monarch Olaf's Verse and then? That'southward good, we shouldn't get out information technology lying effectually now that I've figured out where it is. The Verse was Svaknir'due south contribution to the Poetic Edda, the living history of Skyrim. Each bard adds to the Edda in his or her fourth dimension." He will and then explain that the verse is part of the Poetic Edda, explaining Viarmo'south motivations for seeking it out: "The verse criticized the reigning Rex Olaf. He was then incensed the bard was put to decease and all the copies burned. At least, that's what we thought until I translated some ancient texts a year or so ago. We at present believe Rex Olaf buried the truth with the bard. If I'g right Svaknir and King Olaf's Poetry lie in Dead Men'south Respite, forth with the burial chamber of Rex Olaf himself."
"Now let'due south accept a look at this..."
When yous return from Dead Men's Respite with King Olaf's Poetry in hand, an anxious Viarmo will greet you: "Ah, yous have returned. How goes the job I gave you?" When y'all hand him the verse, he will examine it: "I have to admit I didn't retrieve information technology would actually exist at that place. Now let's take a await at this... Oh. Oh-no. This won't practise at all. The copy is incomplete, information technology'south aged to the point that parts are unreadable. And the parts that are readable... well... bardic verse has come a long way since ancient times." He will and then tell yous the consequences: "It means I can't read information technology to the courtroom. Without the poetry I won't be able to convince Elisif of the importance of The Burning of Male monarch Olaf Festival. If she isn't convinced of the festival's importance and then she won't reverse her decision to stop the figure burning. It means that the Burning of Male monarch Olaf, which the Bards College has held for fourth dimension immemorial, won't be happening." When you suggest to just make up the missing parts of the poesy, he will respond: "Make it up? That doesn't seem appropriate... I suppose I could copy his style based on what you brought me but I have no idea what happened in betwixt these verses." If you leave the conversation earlier he has a take chances to continue, he will annotate: "You're leaving? Okay, we'll but work on the verse in a bit." Regardless, Viarmo will outset to read the books' passages for you, hoping for an input. First, he volition recite the kickoff verse:
He will then stop and wonder: "King Olaf was Olaf Ane-Eye? He famously captured the dragon Numinex and took him to Dragonsreach. What do we say really happened?" 3 options are available at this point, all of which volition reflect how the poem will plow out.
Annotation that your Spoken language skill needs to exist 25 or higher for a successful persuasion:
Olaf found him asleep. "Ha! All right, I'grand writing that in. I'thousand not sure nearly the court but I find that much more likely than Olaf capturing a dragon."
Olaf made a deal with Numinex. "Hmmm, Olaf did become king and Numinex escaped later. It'south entirely possible... and I'g sure the court volition like that, I'm writing it in."
Olaf was Numinex. A dragon in human being class! (Persuade) "I find that highly unlikely... but the court volition love it. I'grand writing it in." OR "I detect that highly unlikely... I think it would exist irresponsible to write that in to the verse."
Once again, Viarmo will stop and wonder nearly the odd verse: "Strange. According to history Solitude attacked Winterhold, but Aesgeir seems to be saying Olaf reacted. What practice we say happened?" You will take to provide your input to fill out the rest.
Note that your Speech skill level must be fifty or higher to persuade him successfully:
Olaf ordered bearded troops to attack Solitude? "And they got the orders backwards. Ha ha ha. Yes, I'm writing that in. It should be good for a laugh from the court."
He convinced Confinement to assail Winterhold. "Information technology's not the most exciting reply simply the well-nigh likely. I'll write information technology in."
He sacked information technology and used magic to blame Confinement. "That sounds skilful. I'm not sure the court will believe that Olaf had magician powers merely we shall see."
Olaf sacked it in dragon form! (Persuade) "Oh that is heady! I'one thousand sure the court and the Jarl will honey it. I'yard writing it in at present." OR "No, that'due south pushing it too far. Very heady but highly unlikely, I can't possibly write that in."
"I wish to present Rex Olaf'south poesy from the Poetic Edda."
After that, an excited Viarmo volition declare the improvised poem finished: "It has a few final lines only that's all we needed to add. I need to head to court immediately and present this. You should come up." He will then be on his mode to the Blue Palace, eager to present it to Elisif the Fair. If you approach him on the way, he volition comment: "I exercise promise the court likes the verse. I call up nosotros've washed an splendid task of recreating it." He will also exit conversation with: "We should really get to courtroom." Upon arriving in the Blue Palace, Viarmo will politely take a seat in the lobby, waiting for yous to arrive. When asked, he will declare himself prepare to face the court: "I think my vocalisation is set up. I hope nosotros've done this well." He volition then walk up the stairs, adamant to perform the Edda, and will just say: "Non now." When he stands before jarl Elisif, she will say:
Elisif: "Ah, Viarmo. I assume you are here to petition for the reinstatement of the Burning of King Olaf Festival."
Viarmo: "I am, Jarl. I wish to present King Olaf's verse from the Poetic Edda. Recovered this very day from the Bards Tomb."
Elisif: "Ah, you mentioned something that would convince us the festival should accept place simply I didn't look Rex Olaf'south lost poesy. Please proceed."
Viarmo will and so start, and his recitation will reverberate what yous chose back at the higher:
"You have proven your point, Viarmo."
After his powerful performance, Viarmo volition be silent while Elisif will be seemingly convinced that the festival is nowhere about distasteful:
Elisif: "Yous have proven your point, Viarmo. The festival is truly a celebration of Solitude and a condemnation of simulated kings."
Viarmo: "I thank you and the college thanks y'all, Jarl."
Elisif: "Furthermore, I believe that such a fine poem deserves some payment of Patronage. The college will be moderately/generously rewarded."
Viarmo: "Thanks all the same over again. I volition make sure our applicant, who was instrumental in... recovering the verse form volition be well rewarded."
While the court returns to their daily routine, Viarmo volition plough to you lot: "Unbelievable! You lot have done us a great service here. I tin can't begin to cheers enough." When asked if the effort has made you a bard, he volition say: "Soon, before long. These things must exist done properly, you will be inducted as function of the Festival itself. I need you to go speak to Jorn. He was preparing the Effigy of King Olaf. Tell him to finish the preparations, the Festival is dorsum on." He volition and then render to the higher and will only say: We should have the festival before long. He will likewise get out conversation with a reminder: "Don't forget to speak to Jorn when you're gear up for the festival."
"Welcome, people of Solitude!"
When you speak to Jorn, he will say: "Ah the bardhoped-for. Did Viarmo send you?" and volition then tell y'all to join the Burning of Male monarch Olaf outside the higher. In one case outside, you will find half the city gathered effectually the effigy of King Olaf, including Viarmo with a lit torch in his hand. When everything is fix he will provide a speech: "Welcome, people of Solitude! We of the Bards Higher are pleased to be here to celebrate the Burning of King Olaf. The festival would non have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our latest applicant." Yous will at present receive a round of applause from the citizens, while Viarmo continues: "With the lighting of the effigy..." Viarmo will take a brief break and utilise the torch to gear up the effigy on fire and volition and so continue: "He becomes a full-fledged member of the Bards College. Please welcome our newest Bard!" At that place is another round of adulation while King Olaf burns. Viarmo will and then walk upwards to you lot: "I think they similar you." He will then confirm that you lot are officially a bard at the prestigious higher: "Yes. Congratulations, you are at present a total-fledged member of the Bards College. Due to your audacious nature several of the college professors have some things they wish y'all to do. What's more, Elisif has declared the Called-for of Rex Olaf should go a weekly issue. And finally, there's the thing of the Patronage that Elisif wanted me to give you." He will and so hand you a reward and offset his daily routine by going straight to bed while one-half of Solitude celebrates the Burning of Rex Olaf.
Notes [edit]
- During his dejeuner break at the Winking Skeever, Viarmo was meant to have several conversations with the other members of the Bards College. Yet, the conversations requires the participation of student Aia Arria, who will never prepare pes at the Skeever, so these conversations will never exist heard:
Speaker | Conversation |
---|---|
Pantea | "Viarmo, the college actually must have a stand on the state of war!" |
"Viarmo, don't you think it's fourth dimension that the Bards College officially declared support for the empire?" | |
Viarmo | "Lady Ateia, information technology is the official position of the higher to remain neutral in all political affairs. Nosotros cannot risk our history by choosing sides." |
"At present, now, our duty is to tape the great tales of history, not to pick sides in them. Best to stay out of the warfare, I feel." | |
Aia | "But I'grand certain those Skyrim dogs would stand downward if the keepers of the tales showed their patriotism!" |
"Maybe if nosotros stopped singing almost their airheaded Nord heroes, the rebels would stop making such a fuss!" | |
Pantea | "Aia, please be quiet. Viarmo and I are discussing matters of national politics." |
"Aia, this is a delicate matter. Why don't you review your lessons and be silent for a while." | |
Viarmo | "Pantea, perhaps you should nourish to your students, and leave the politics to me." |
"That is precisely why nosotros remain neutral. Ours is to tell tales of empires, not to make or break them." |
Bugs [edit]
- After the related quest, Viarmo may hold the burning torch from the festival permanently, even when he is sleeping in bed.
- Due to two different bugs in Tending the Flames, the recitation may not friction match your choices, and some of the recitation can never be heard at all.
